Description:
Review "The first version of NeuroDynamix was an extremely effective tool for helping students attain a quantitative understanding of neurophysiology, and the new version is even easier to use. The simulations allow students to repeat classic electrophysiology experiments, such as voltage clamping a squid giant axon. More importantly, the structure of the program encourages students to experiment with their own ideas. I have found NeuroDynamix to be an indispensable complement to wet-lab experiments in neurobiology." -- James Angstadt, Siena College "A concise, approachable and clear introduction to bioelectricity, illustrated interactively using the NeuroDynamix II modeling environment. Undergraduate or graduate students working through the exercises in this book will encounter a diverse set of demonstrations and experiments that build progressively from the properties of simple resistors and R-C circuits to examples of neural networks underlying rhythmic motor patterns. This book will be a valuable supplement to my undergraduate neuroscience course." -- Kevin Crisp, St. Olaf College "NeuroDynamix II brings us to the very essence of mathematical modelling and computer simulations in biology, deep and simple as they may be. Elaborated with careful didactics and based on a solid scientific background and computer expertise, it is a modern version of a neurophysiology lecture of the highest standard." -- Gisele Akemi Oda, University of SГЇВїВЅo Paulo "Graduate students and scientists who need to become familiar with electrophysiology principles will profit greatly from this tutorial. The greatest strength of NeuroDynamix II is its close integration with a series of computer simulations. These simulations allow the reader to actively manipulate the critical electrophysiological parameters discussed in the didactic presentation." -- Mark D. Rollag, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences About the Author W. Otto Friesen is Professor of Biology at the University of Virginia.Jonathon A. Friesen is a systems analyst specializing in support of large-scale business applications in the Philadelphia area.

Description:
Review "Ignored by politicians and journalists who routinely pronounce the death of multiculturalism this extraordinary book shows how British society is re-made by young people that both carry and redefine the diversity of cultural life. Harris' unique contribution is his attentiveness to quotidian multicultural realities. The lesson--even more important now than when it was first published--is that ethnicity is defined not by the short-hand of identity labels like Sikh, Muslim, Black, White but rather by what people do everyday." --Les Back, Professor of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London --This text refers to the edition. About the Author ROXY HARRIS is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Science and Public Policy at King's College London.

Description:
As the only female page in history to last beyond the first year of formal training to become a knight, 11-year-old Keladry of Mindelan has an uphill battle to fight. In addition to proving herself worthy of being a page, Kel spends her time defending first-year pages from bullies, staying on top of homework, conquering her paralyzing fear of heights, and keeping up with Lord Wyldon's grueling physical training schedule. Kel's detractors do everything in their power to thwart her progress, from tormenting her friends to sabotaging the Midwinter Festivities to kidnapping her maid and dog on the day of final examinations. The tide of resistance begins to turn slightly during the summer between Kel's second and third years, when she leads a team of pages in defensive maneuvers against renegade bandits, coincidentally on the same day that she gets her first period.

Book Description How do social situations influence language use and conversation? Teun van Dijk discusses and develops a theory of 'context' and its relationship to communication, and argues that it is not the social situation that influences (or is influenced by) conversation, but the way the participants define such a situation. About the Author Teun A. van Dijk was Professor of Discourse Studies at the University of Amsterdam until 2004, and is at present Professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. After earlier work on generative poetics, text grammar, and the psychology of text processing, his work since 1980 has taken a more critical perspective and deals with discursive racism, news in the press, ideology, knowledge and context. He is the author of several books in most of these areas, and edited The Handbook of Discourse Analysis (four volumes, 1985) the introductory book Discourse Studies (two volumes, 1997) as well as the reader The Study of Discourse (five volumes, 2007). He has founded six international journals - Poetics, Text (now Text & Talk), Discourse & Society, Discourse Studies, Discourse & Communication and the internet journal in Spanish Discurso & Sociedad (www.dissoc.org) - of which he still edits the latter four. His last monographs in English are Ideology (1998) and Racism and Discourse in Spain and Latin America (2005), and his last edited book (with Ruth Wodak) is Racism at the Top (2000). He is currently completing a new interdisciplinary study in two volumes on the theory of context, and planning a new book on discourse and knowledge. Van Dijk, who holds two honorary doctorates, has lectured widely in many countries, especially Latin America. With Adriana Bolivar he founded the AsociaciГіn Latino-Americana de Estudios del Discurso (ALED), in 1995. Description:
Jordan Glass, a photojournalist on a well-earned vacation, wanders into a Hong Kong art museum and is puzzled to find fellow patrons eying her with curiosity. Minutes later, she stumbles upon a gallery containing a one-artist exhibition called "The Sleeping Women," a mysterious series of paintings that has caused a sensation in the world of modern art. Collectors have come to believe that the canvases depict female nudes not in sleep but in death, and they command millions at auction. When Jordan approaches the last work in the series, she freezes. The face in the painting seems to be her own. This unsettling event hurls her back into a nightmare she has fought desperately to put behind her - for, in fact, the face in the painting belongs not to Jordan but to her twin sister, murdered one year ago. At the urging of the FBI, Jordan becomes both hunter and hunted in a duel with the anonymous artist, a gifted murderer who knows the secret history of Jordan's family, and truths that even she has never had the courage to face.

Review From the reviews: "Thomas details marketing activities and techniques for health care practitioners and administrators in for-profit and non-profit organizations. He presents basic concepts of marketing and ways to implement a marketing initiative, including the process, research, planning, healthcare products and customers, positioning and strategy development, financial aspects, choosing among promotional options, social marketing, new approaches, and measuring effectiveness. … Checklists, forms, questionnaires, and other materials are provided." (www.booknews.com, April, 2008) "This easy to comprehend book describes the tactics and strategy required to effectively market products and services in the healthcare industry. … the book is written for students, residents, and practitioners who all would benefit from the simple discussion of marketing practices. … for marketing communications professionals, the history and complexities of the health industry provided in the book are very useful as a foundation." (Lawrence M. Leber, Doody’s Review Service, March, 2009) From the Back Cover For today’s health care professional, clinical expertise is not enough—one has to know the market. Even when a facility has its own marketing department, practitioners are regularly called on for their input. Health Services Marketing: A Practitioner’s Guide clearly and succinctly explains the range of marketing activities and techniques, from promotions to pricing, so any health professional can learn to navigate this bewildering but increasingly important aspect of healthcare. Richard Thomas’ step-by-step guide for developing a marketing plan and carrying out a successful campaign offers a hands-on approach to proven methods for staying a step ahead of the healthcare marketing game: The health industry as seen from the marketing perspective. Healthcare products, and the consumers who need them. What marketing can (and can’t) do for a medical practice. Demographics and beyond: how social marketing works. Where your marketing dollar goes: staying on budget. Market positioning: knowing the competition, building the strategy. Evaluating a marketing plan’s effectiveness. Plus dozens of forms, checklists, and questionnaires to simplify the process. Useful to practitioners and administrators alike, and equally suited to the for-profit as to the non-profit organization, Health Services Marketing gives the reader valuable tools to reach out to consumers and build lasting relationships.

Description:
Book Description One of the challenges in treating cancer is the disease's complexity and variation among patients. Cancer manifests differently in each patient, so treatments that are effective in one patient may not be effective in another. As cancer care becomes more personalized, subpopulations of individuals will be given preventive or therapeutic interventions based on their susceptibility to a particular disease or their predicted response to a specific treatment. However, before the use of personalized cancer care can reach its full potential, the health care system must resolve a number of technological, regulatory, and reimbursement issues. To explore these policy challenges, the National Cancer Policy Forum held the workshop Policy Issues in the Development of Personalized Medicine in Oncology in June 2009. Experts provided presentations on the current state of personalized medicine technology, as well as issues in the validation of, regulation of, and reimbursement for the predictive tests that underpin personalized medicine. Participants discussed the obstacles and possible solutions to further developing and using personalized medicine technologies. This document summarizes the workshop.

Description:
From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up—This revised question-and-answer book was not designed for life in a children's room. While some of the answers are simple enough, others are for adults. For example, one of the definitive characteristics of a dinosaur is described as "...an elongated deltopectoral crest on the humerus...and a well-developed ascending process on the astragalus," phrasing that is all but unapproachable without a scientific dictionary. However, dinophiles willing to sift through the text armed with said dictionary will find a lot to satisfy them, including the last chapter, which leads to information on digs, excavation techniques, equipment, fossil preparation, and educational requirements, plus a heap of further readings (many adult) and Web sites. Many small photographs and computer-generated images and some reproductions are scattered throughout, as are information boxes expounding on more common questions. A serious, often scholarly examination of a fascinating topic.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Review "Simply and accurately written . . . presents material in an easy-to-use and readable format. The title promises handy answers and it delivers them." —American Reference Books Annual "Offers even more information that is sure to keep the interest of any dinosaur lover, young and old. “The Handy Dinosaur Answer Book” is a fine addition to any community library science collection." —Midwest Book Review "Succinct, well-researched answers, photos and a Further Resource section make this exactly what it says, 'a smart reference.'" —Dig: The Archaeology Magazine for Kids "This is a good book for the general reader and for public libraries." —American Association for the Advancement of Science's Science Books & Films: Your Online Review Guide to Science Resources for All Ages "This collection of questions and answers about dinosaurs . . . lends itself to finding specific information in short sections. It will fascinate and motivate readers. Whether they read this book at length or just browse through it, readers will find it to be an excellent source of fundamental knowledge about an interesting subject." —National Science Teachers Association Recommends

Description:
From Publishers Weekly Choosing to tell her debut novel from the point of view of a Mexican woman, North Carolina native Gershten produces a moving, convincing tale. Born in TeatlВ n (for which read MazatlВ n) at mid-century long before it became a resort, narrator Guadalupe Magdalena Molina VВ squez embodies most of the contradictions of Mexico itself: she believes in love but is suspicious of men; she rejects religion but yearns for faith; and she respects tradition while breaking all the rules. The adult Magda describes her coming of age in the barrio, selling the corn-based drink tejuino in short shorts at age 14 and making more money than her father. Driven out of town three years later by the League of Decency--a cover for jealous wives--Magda becomes a go-go dancer in Tijuana, a rich rancher's wife in Monterrey, then marries a professor and lives in Idaho for a dozen years. Always, however, she is drawn back to TeatlВ n, even at the cost of being separated from her half-gringa daughter, Martina, for months at a time. Magda endures every form of abuse, and it is no surprise that the novel is dedicated to "all the whores in history." Magda may not be a winner in the tradition of unsinkable heroes, but she is not a loser, either. She is unafraid to use, learn and move on, and she is independent, determined not to succumb to the demands of her native country or her adopted one. Agent, Jean Naggar. (Mar.)Forecast: Gershten's appropriation of Mexican themes and language--Spanish colloquialisms pepper the text--may strike some readers as condescending, but this spirited novel, the first recipient of Barbara Kingsolver's Bellwether Prize for a work of socially or politically engaged fiction, will ultimately win over most skeptics. Author appearances in the Southwest, Denver and North Carolina and a 15-city NPR campaign should get sales off to a good start. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Recipient of the first Bellwether Prize, established by Barbara Kingsolver for socially or politically engaged fiction, this debut novel depicts the life of a young woman who has grown up poor in Mexico's extremely patriarchal culture. Through observation and experience, she has developed rules that she believes will insure her survival within this culture. Unfortunately, when she marries into a U.S. household, she finds that these rules no longer apply. Despite her acquired affluence, Magda is haunted by childhood hunger and poverty and unable to adapt to her new lifestyle. It is as if she were watching a foreign-language film without subtitles. Gershten writes powerfully, carefully choosing words that create atmosphere and portraying characters that are tangible and have depth. This deeply moving work should find a place in the fiction collections of both academic and public libraries.-DRebecca Stuhr, Grinnell Coll. Description:
From Publishers Weekly As a microcosm of society, organized baseball has survived its share of battles over racism, pay inequity, unionizing and scandals. Here, Burk, chair of the history department at Muskingum College, follows up Never Just a Game: Players, Owners, and American Baseball to 1920 with an in-depth look at the sport as a business from its post-WWI golden age to beyond the 1994 players' strike. With the increasing globalization of baseball, Burk argues for a future of greater economic predictability and increased on-field-off-field cooperation ("the players' own interests might prove best served by agreeing to a new partnership in which labor peace and a formal coequal role in industry decisions was gained in exchange for accepting reasonable leaguewide minimum and maximum payrolls"). The author divides the past 80 years into two discrete periods: the first, the "paternalistic era," and the second, the "inflationary era," which began when baseball, and the nation, were forever changed by the civil rights movement and a generation unafraid to question authority. As he chronicles the history of baseball's labor movement (the section describing the conditions minority players had to endure in the '40s and '50s is especially interesting), Burk focuses on the major people like Curtis Flood, who accused the league of conspiracy when he was traded, and Fay Vincent, who alienated players and team owners during his reign as baseball commissioner a focus that significantly animates his heavily detailed narrative. (Mar. 5) Forecast: Although primed for publication just before Opening Day 2001, Burk's exhaustive analysis is geared for a keen but ultimately small readership among the legions of baseball book-buying enthusiasts; despite its energetic title, stores should anticipate only modest sales. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the edition. From Library Journal Burk (history, Muskingum Coll.) has written a companion to his Never Just a Game: Players, Owners and American Baseball to 1920. Burk focuses on baseball's volatile labor history, contrasting the "paternalistic era" of 1921 through the early 1960s (which was often bleak and unfair to many players) with the seeming prosperity of current times. In these days of escalating salaries and costs and the friction that exists between players and management, this book provides scholarly background. Libraries featuring comprehensive sports and/or labor relations collections should consider. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the edition.

Description:
From Publishers Weekly Gruden traces his transformation from pigskin letdown as a player to gridiron triumph as a Super Bowl-winning coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He avoids charges of nepotism (his father was a successful coach and trainer in his own right) simply by chronicling his own determination. He devotes a good deal of space to the importance of assembling highlight reels for the team to study-and captures all the wacky vocabulary of offensive and defensive plays, "Waggle Right Double Out Waggle Right Drag Hook" being just one of many. Gruden gleans wisdom from the colorful likes of Bobby Knight, Bill Walsh and other legendary coaches with whom he has worked. Players, too, are sketched vividly and personally-from Steve Young and Joe Montana to Randall Cunningham and Ricky Watters. It's not often that one reads about what it's like for a gifted QB like Young to have to just cheer on while another gifted QB like Montana leads a team to glory. But it's Gruden's own portrait that emerges most sharply: he's the scrappy private who almost imperceptibly becomes field commander. An insomniac who has the face of "Chucky," he's also funny and self-deprecating, telling such stories as George Seifert balling him out for sharpening the famed 49ers coach's playwriting pencils. The point of it all is that football isn't about winning, but about learning how to win. B&w photos.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Just another book by a football coach about winning and hard work? Hardly. Gruden's story is different for two reasons: First, at 39, he was the youngest head coach to ever win a Super Bowl. Second, prior to that triumphant year, he was traded--yes, traded--from Oakland to Tampa Bay in an unprecedented move worth four draft picks and millions of dollars. So there he was, in front of the Buccaneers, who barely had a chance to say good-bye to their beloved ex-coach Tony Dungy. Talk about expectations! Gruden met the challenge by winning the 2003 Super Bowl (Tampa Bay's opponent? Oakland, of course). Gruden, aka Chucky for his scowl, which brings to mind the horror-movie doll, takes us with him on a romp through his past, starting with how his dad, also a coach, instilled in him the love of football and extending through his playing days and rapid rise as a coach. Gruden has lived life like he coaches: there's no sense being there if you don't give it your all. Mary Frances WilkensCopyright В© American Library Association. All rights reserved

Description:
In the year 2043, an American-led Alliance has been at war with Ngumi, a third-world confederation, for eight years, due largely to the Alliance's refusal to share new technology. Aside from a few thermonuclear strikes, most of the fighting, at least on the Alliance's side, has been carried out by 'soldierboys,' killing machines run under remote control by brain-jacked 'mechanics,' many of them draftees like physicist Julian Class. Meanwhile, in orbit around Jupiter, humanity's most ambitious scientific experiment ever, the Jupiter Project, is coming to fruition. But Julian's lover and former adviser, Amelia Harding, discovers that potentially the Project could destroy not just our solar system but the entire universe, in a reprise of the Big Bang. When Amelia and Julian try to stop the Project, their way is blocked by the Hammer of God, an influential Christian cult dedicated to bringing about the Endtime. As always, Haldeman, a Vietnam vet, writes with intelligence and power about the horrors of war, and about humanity's seeming inability to overcome its violent tendencies. Julian Class, like so many of Haldeman's protagonists, is an essentially good man who, forced by the military to become a killer, has been driven nearly to suicide by guilt. His story packs an enormous emotional punch.

Review Gypsy Identities is informative, thought provoking and innovative, and should find a home in every university research library, and on bookshelves in the homes of many Gypsies, Gypsy scholars, politicians and public servants. It will provide a great stimulus for seminar discussions about Gypsies, and not just in Gypsy studies courses. Gypsy Identities also has merit as a potential standard work in multicultural studies, and should be considered for adoption for either teaching or reference purposes across the social sciences and humanities. - David J. Nemeth, Romani Studies Be warned: Gypsy Identities 1500-2000 (Taylor and Francis), by David Mayall, challenges the grand narrative, as postmodernists would say, of the great-Roma-trek-from-India discourse - David Altheer, The Times --This text refers to the edition. Description:
Review Brief and compelling book. (David Isenberg Asia Times Summer 2005) Marten draws a sharp distinction between when the international community should assert a heavy hand and when it should tread lightly. (Salaman Ahmed Foreign Affairs 9/1/05) It is a book that every student of world politics should read. (Andrew Preston International Journal ) Enforcing the Peace is well written, combining high academic quality with popular relevance and accessibility. (Kristoffer Liden Journal of Peace Research ) Marten offers an invaluable analysis of the challenges of contemporary peacekeeping. (David Edelstein Political Science Quarterly ) Instructive. (Tony Smith Perspectives on Politics ) An important, useful, and timely contribution to our understanding of peacekeeping. (Satish P. Joshi H-War ) Review Provocative....Others have seen parallels between peacekeeping operations and colonialism, but Marten takes that analogy and develops it to its logical and highly controversial conclusion--that colonialism provides a potential model for success and can rescue complex peacekeeping operations from their steady stream of failures. This is an important and much needed addition to the peacekeeping literature. Although some might view the presumed parallels between colonialism and peacekeeping to be polemical, Marten's coolly reasoned and historically rich arguments should cause even the most dismissive to take a hard look and to wrestle with her policy recommendations.
